Essay in Yesterday's New York Times

22gracious600_2

An essay I wrote on my collection of vintage "gracious living" books appeared in yesterday's New York Times. As it as Thanksgiving, you may have missed it...

It begins: "I USED to give the worst holiday get-togethers. I was a jittery mess, the sort of person who leapt to refill a glass and filled any conversational lull with nervous chatter. Of course, that was before I discovered “My Way of Life,” Joan Crawford’s 1971 guide to “gracious living,” six years ago."

The Thanksgiving negotiations begin

My sister Dinah is hyper-organized. She's going to kill me but here is the businesslike e mail she just sent to me and my other sister, Heather. My favorite line is 'we touched on it briefly.' Also: the way she signs the letter.

When she mentions crescent rolls, you can best believe they are Pillsbury crescent rolls in a can. Now Pillsbury will throw the Dunn family into a tizzy with the advent of Place N' Bake Crescent Rounds. What to do?

Hey guys,

We haven't had a chance to talk about Thanksgiving menus. I touched on it briefly with Jancee but I thought I'd start the ball rolling.

Here is our traditional menu and my questions:

Turkey--Are we bringing one or is Rob getting one? Let me know.
Mashed potatoes--necessary?
Sweet potatoes--Mom will make
Cornbread stuffing--necessary?
Bread stuffing--Jancee said she had a recipe
Other stuffing--Patrick has a recipe with chestnuts and apples he'd like to make
Gravy--Patrick will make?
Rolls--Jancee said she had a recipe or, if you think it is too much work, we can save it for Christmas and do crescent rolls
Vegetable--Patrick would like to do brussell sprouts unless you want something different
Pumpkin Pie--Me?
Pecan Pie--Jancee?
Any other dessert?

Also, do we want to do appetizers mid-afternoon? If so, there is a Martha recipe for parmesan icebox crackers we like to make. Or, we can save it for Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas, Heather talked about possibly doing a charity donation. I love this charity: http://www.pajamaprogram.org/index.html Let me know what you think. Also, if you have any ideas for gifts that you want or for your husbands, let me know. I'd love to get shopping.

Best,

Dinah
